The Golden Rules of Tattoo & PMU Aftercare

September 1, 2025

A new tattoo or permanent makeup (PMU) application is an investment in your appearance.

To protect that investment, proper aftercare is not just a suggestion—

it's essential for beautiful, long-lasting results and preventing infection.

While your artist will provide specific instructions, here are the universal golden rules.

1. Keep it Clean: Gently wash the area with a mild, fragrance-free soap and lukewarm water 2-3 times a day. Pat it dry with a clean paper towel; do not rub. This removes bacteria and excess plasma without irritating the sensitive skin.

2. Moisturize, Don't Drown: Apply a thin layer of a recommended aftercare ointment. This keeps the skin hydrated, prevents heavy scabbing, and promotes healing. However, over-moisturizing can clog pores and trap bacteria, so a little goes a long way.

3. Protect from the Elements: For the first few weeks, avoid direct sun exposure, swimming pools, saunas, and excessive sweating. UV rays can fade the pigment, while prolonged moisture can introduce bacteria and ruin the settling process.

4. Hands Off! The area will likely itch and flake as it heals. Resist the urge to scratch, pick, or peel the scabs. Let them fall off naturally to ensure the pigment remains even and a scar does not form.

Following these simple yet crucial steps will ensure your new body art or cosmetic enhancement heals perfectly, looking as stunning as you envisioned.
